Closet Curator Origin Story
The year was 2009 and I was soon to become an empty nester. I had spent the prior 20 years as a full time mom and 17 of those years as a part time sales person working for Gap, Inc. stores in various cities. But now it was time to consider my own “next chapter”.
And then a friend asked me to come over and help her figure out her closet. She said she had too many clothes but somehow never the right clothes. She was having difficulty defining her style. She wasn’t sure what to get rid of. She had noticed the way I dressed and knew that I worked in retail, and she thought maybe I could help her. It was a lightbulb moment for me. The seed of an idea. I wrote up a business plan, put out a press release and Closet Curator was born.
Along the way I trained with—and then worked as a stylist for—Stacy London of What Not to Wear fame, when she launched her short-lived company Style for Hire. It was an opportunity to get a foothold in NYC and in the stylist community there and has led me to many fantastic opportunities, including working as a stylist for Worth New York, for Carlisle/Etcetera and for CABI Clothing. And it led me to become one of the earliest adopters of Hue & Stripe, the website I use to create virtual closets and look books for my clients. Hue & Stripe has also become a treasured community of stylists to whom I frequently turn for guidance, suggestions and ideas.
My business is now entering its 16th year. Throughout, I’ve been working with mostly (but not only) women, helping them curate their wardrobe and their style. I’m not a Red Carpet stylist. Not an Editorial Stylist. I’m the kind of stylist who helps people figure out how they want to dress for every day in a way that is comfortable, authentic, and practical for their lifestyle. The steps involved in that process are outlined briefly on the home page but I tailor the process to each individual client based on their needs, goals, time, and budget.
So that’s my story. It’s been a wonderful experience, starting and developing a small business. I’ve loved every part of the work and have enjoyed the people with whom I’ve worked. And I welcome the opportunity to work with you too! Let’s talk soon.
